Foothills Community Workshop is located in the town of Granite Falls, NC and was in the bottom floor of an old textile mill. We originally got a great deal on approx. 5000+ sq. ft. of space, but had to re-wire it and do a large amount of cleanup. FCW is a 501(c)3 non-profit and is open to the public. Our current members have expertise in: Machining (both CNC and manual), woodworking, construction, analog electronics, digital electronics, embedded systems, model railroads, stagecraft, science, farming, ham radio, linux, windows, networking, programming and other various topics. FCW has worked with the pubic schools, home schools, the local science center, scouts and other organizations to promote STEM and the arts to the local area.

We had a CNC machine shop, woodworking shop with a large CNC router, electronics shop, model shop, model railroad, Ham radio station (K4FCW), office/lounge area, library, stagecraft shop, science lab and classroom.

On July 21, 2017 the building containing FCW caught fire, which rapidly engulfed the entire 180000sq ft building, destroying 4 residential apartments, over 250 storage units, and 4 businesses, including FCW. Fortunately, no-one was injured, but one of our members lost his apartment (including his cat) and FCW lost all of the equipment except one ham radio antenna.

On October 31, 2017, FCW purchased a buiding with over 11000 sq ft of space. We have replaced most equipment and have started back up with the areas: Metalworking (machining, welding, sheet metal, foundary), woodworking, electronics, ham radio (K4FCW), Science (chemistry, physics, biology, astronomy), Arts & Crafts (stagecraft, costumes/sewing, props, sets, special effects, lighting, sound, video, glasswork, model shop, fabrication (laser cutting, 3d printing)), a vintage computer museum, kitchen, library, HO and O railroad, classroom and a lounge.

General meetings are on Saturdays at 3PM , and project/working meetings are on Tuesdays at 7PM. Standard membership is $35 per month and includes 24/7 access. Guests are welcome at any meeting or anytime someone is at the space.
