Here is where the craftsman or woman can gain money for applying their labor and talents towards ends which are valued by the greater whole. Civilization needs locks and machines of various kinds, castles/dwellings of various kinds, bridges, signage, weapons/armor to fight, cloth and textiles, raw food sources, shops to sell wares, jewelry, artwork perhaps.

A craftslan may build the talent to forge a winnowing machine for gathering wheat out of a field, for example, so that it can be sold en masse on the market for a city, amplifying his/her labors to improve their position in life.

A craftslan may sell a device of some kind, but if they did not think through it well enough, the inquiry of another player or stresses of the world-at-large may make it fail.

There are five guilds, giving unique kinds of work:

  • Woodworkers guild offering woodcraft: house-building, carts, treasure chests, wheel-making, ale barrels, bows & arrows,
  • Textiles guild teaching the art of weaving: clothes, flags, boots, drapes, rope. Uses looms to bring their plys to the masses.
  • Leatherworkers guild teaching leather accoutrements, armors, shoes.
  • The Masons teaching stonework: how to fit stones together to make a strong building, how to build domes and arches, etch words into stone.
  • The blacksmiths holding knowledge of metalwork: how to shape and forge metal (bronze, iron, copper, gold)
  • Printers guild, useful for news, scrolls, spellbooks, legal purpose, town notices. Also responsible for inks (might have to fight some NPCs). #move to magistrate?
  • Farmers guild, for agriculture: harvesting grain and cultivating seeds. #move to herbalist?

The guilds and tools of such craftwork are not available to just anyone, and you'll probably have to multi-class to become a member. The tools of these guilds have been forged by generations of fellow craftslan, by protecting who can access these tools, you protect the guild's history and values, becoming a part of it.

Note: If you're looking for chemistry, you have join the mages, for the behavior of interactions is guided by the power and the parsimony within such.
