There are loads of things a top-notch driver would want to be aware of while driving or when getting into the vehicle to start it. Things like:

When starting:

  • air filter quality
  • fuel levels
  • battery charged
  • oil level
  • tread quality and tire pressurization
  • chassis tightness (all the bolts tight and shocks/springs tuned?)

When driving:

  • rpm (tachometer)
  • fuel flow
  • oil flow and quality
  • vacuum pressure after air filter
  • engine temperature, perhaps at various points on engine
  • torque
  • engine combustion quality (acoustics generally works)
  • engine robustness (exhaust quality works)
  • wheel rotations

so you have to have instruments -- instruments that give you read-outs without clutter or spurious noise.

As a driver attunes to the machine, each of these measurements trains him/her to their relationship of their machine to the world. They become one with the machine.
