Spellplague is a remnant of the Mage Wars of old, where the battles over psionic energy versus mana were fought to decide who would be the strongest wizard. The issue was decided by the love of a warrior to a female that had to put the energy of psionics to women to ensure the continuation of the race.

What remains of the continued disagreements is spellplague where (mostly evil) wizards take the power of women and use it for thier own nefarious purposes.
