What you DON'T want is one of those apartment from those color magazine apartment listings. There's nothing quite as drab as a monoculture apartment space filled with people living in close proximity, yet are completely alienated from one another.

Here's some secr3t tips: go to coffeeshops or laundry mats and look for their bulletin board. These often will have rooms for rent. If you're a college student, look to the Student Union on University Campus. Look for laundry facilities on-site, biking or walking proximity to grocery stores, cultural centers (like a university :^), or work environments. If you don't have a car (good for you), access to public transportation facilities. Garden? You can be sure there's some nice hippy folks there making good food.
