Any organization implies some sort of mission or governing body. There are a just a few reasons to organize rather than leave it all to libertarianism:

  • Collective action
  • Collective resources
  • Centralizing of power (to make change, to enforce rules, ...)
  • Deferment of liability (to deflect personal liability)

Which of these are used for hackerspaces? Many use the benefit of collective resources (machine tools, wifi, etc.). Others like collective action (social aspects, activism). People interested in forming such a space should consider all of these reasons, to understand why they feel a desire to organize. This is how they should craft their purpose. It's at that point, and that point only, are they really ready to form a hackerspace.
