Maps are great tools. They can mark show the way to different cities, the opening to the Cavern of the Waylings, where the forests are plentiful, etc.
Lords and Leaders can ask explorers to go out and explore the territory to create a map.
Explorers can create maps and sell to a general store. The DM can sell these to other players, in nicely printed form, for players who wish to have a copy. The map should contain a marking of its creator.
