Software-defined radio' are RF systems where frequency, modulation, output power, and perhaps some other parameters can be defined via software control.

This is in contrast to hardware radio where one sets these things through switches, knobs, tuners, etc.

Software-defined radio opens up the possibility for on-demand dynamics to control output power to stay under various limits, see radio enthusiasts, for more.
