A Hackbase or Hackerbase is a Live-in Hackerspace - a hackerspace with a capacity for coliving.

  • everything you would expect from a hackerspace + place to stay (sleep, eat, ...)
  • ... this includes being publicly accessible (via a clear and non-discriminatory process)
  • able to host short or long-term stays
  • residents cover their own costs (which are usually far less than "normal" lifestyles)
  • extension on the practices of sharing already present in hackerspaces
  • hosts hacker Residencies and Exchanges

Known self-described hackbases:

Communication channels:

Probably also a hackbase:

  • Alte Hölle between Berlin and Magdeburg, Germany. The idea for the self-described seminar house originated during CCC events.
  • Calafou @ Vallbona d´Anoia (Barcelona), Spain
  • Hacker Farm @ Kamogawa, Japan (2 hours east of Tokyo)
  • Astralship.org converted church in Snowdonia (Wales, UK), resembling a pirate ship
  • Factor e Farm of Open Source Ecology near Kansas City, Missouri, USA
  • Kanthaus @ Wurzen, DE (Close to Leipzig)
  • Medialab Matadero @ Madrid (Spain) has 3 residency rooms
  • Cloyne @ Berkeley, California, USA [you have to become a member to live in and use it]
  • Newspeak House @ London, UK ("a hackspace for politics[...] idea is to have activist residencies in the flats, and community space + events downstairs")
  • (a number of other places, listed at open-editable http://totalism.org/alike , which also includes Nomadbases, Eco villages, etc)

Early stages of planning / rumours / unclear / not open for public yet:

Ex-hackbases, and unsuccessful projects:

  • Firefly @ Casper, Wyoming, USA, website
  • The Internet Farm @ Dahmetal, 80km south of Berlin, Germany
  • HackerDome @ Bratislava, Slovakia, Europe [WAS PLANNED; NOW CHANGED TO FARM PLANS(?)]
  • KEK + HackBeach (event) @ Kerala, India (see june 2016 news)
  • TAZio Hackbase @ Brussels, Belgium (Archive link, 2014): Hackerspace_Brussels (HSBXL) decided on expanding to a bigger space, and make it a hackbase. After much work, finding the place, budgeting for it, and signing the lease contract (for a ~2000m2 space), the landlord broke the agreement. The project was scrapped. (more info)
  • The Instantcity Harbour was "a haven of our air/water/road ships. A spot for maintaining the ships". (← defunct: 2022)
  • Infinity + Hillhacks (event) @ Dharamshala, India
  • S14 "queer house, coliving ecosystem, hackbase" @ Antwerp, Belgium (← as of at least 2021, does not operate as a hackbase)
  • Apollo-NG mobile hackbase
