So ye wish to know about the times of the First Age, eh? The times of bloody battles and endangered women? Of owlbears and hobgoblins made by fearsome wizards that you'd avoid their gaze at any cost? If you really want ta know, you have to find Plinth, he's remembered nearly everything, but I can tell you what I know...

Back then, people would diverge well off the road when they saw a wizard walking down the road, because if they were _walking_, it meant that some other mad wizard had taken all of their power and they were probably steaming mad, zapping anything that looked at them wrong.

Well then, there were a lot less forest back then, for one. There weren't many forests because the female and the goddesses had no power back then. No, it was a land ruled by men. Chivalry evolved to balance the imbalance, but it was still men bushwacking their ways to power. Because, back then, if you weren't the top, you were at the bottom. And if you weren't fighting or ready to fight, there was always some innocent getting slayed for nothing at all.

Oh and the dragons! Never was there a time since, that the dragons spit fire and brimstone over and around everywhere. It was like they were angry at the world itself.

But then there weren't that many people either. No, if the dragons didn't make mince meat out of them it was too barbaric for large populations. The gods weren't as present, there was one warrior god (Crom), and then the wizards -- each vying for power over the other, lest they get stripped of all power over magic. Oh, the magic battles they fought defy explaination -- dazzling light shows and boulders hurled across the land. The power had made people cower in fear, until the knights of Grayhawk/Camelot came in to put some protection over a city, though some divine force that was so distant no one knew it`s name.

The tales of those times is one of darkness and fear. Women clung to men, and men clung to their swords. If any child was born, they were quickly put work, probably to fortify the city or to tend the fields to ensure that food was available. They were extremely hard times, the times when humans discovered power -- power over the metals and magic, but used it over each other until no one won anything. Eventually, though, love won by winning the heart of the hardened warrior and by the intelligence of the mages realizing that there was no way to win. Only one mage survived.

You might now him as "Gandalf", but then, for that you have to learn about the Second Age.
