The ethos of the hackerspace aesthetic is about shunning the excesses of the old paradigm, predicated on (imagined) endless oil reserves and disposable products, and embracing minimalism -- making a lot with very little.

It works because the greater intelligence and creativity croXsed with the throw-away culture allows the curation of concentrated value -- whether in tools or books or code. Add free access and you're making a new, creative economy. All with very little money -- because they know that the real value is with people, the internet, and the freedom they have being self-reliant.
