SpaceLab 1 is a collaborative coworking and makerspace in the south Chicago Suburbs. While no shortage of work is done at SpaceLab (it’s the headquarter of game development and publishing company Lunar Giant), members also enjoy the creativity of making and hacking on a regular basis. Located right across the street from the Mokena Metra commuter train stop, it’s the perfect blend of quiet small town and easy to reach. SpaceLab members have produced projects, most recently a 3D controller, using the Raspberry Pi, Makey Makey, Arduino, and a host of other hardware hacking goodies. SpaceLab members and community members are encouraged to bring their projects, ideas, and questions to the space for input, answers, and a fun educational experience. In addition to personal projects, SpaceLab hosts programming and hacking workshops and classes, taught by members. Most recently, the space has been engaged in a study group series called “Embedded Systems – Shaping the World” based on an edX online class. SpaceLab’s dedication to teaching making and hacking skills isn’t limited to its primary location. They’re currently hosting several classes at the library: robotics, programming, and game making. With a growing list of classes, gatherings, and goings on, SpaceLab is looking to grow their membership. Whether you just want somewhere you can stop in and work on projects or whether a full coworking space has been your goal for some time, SpaceLab has a membership level that’s right for you. The best thing about SpaceLab is their members.
