MysticLink is a proposed Hackerspace + Internet Cafe with an emphasis on educational classes

The plan for this space is to make it basic and affordable so no heavy machinery like table saws or drill presses. Just some 3D printers, a soldering station or maybe a small table top CNC machine. (This may also help with the insurance costs) I would also like to build a server rack to create a "Community Datacenter" that would host projects by members and could be used for classes. I also want the space to double as a sort of modern day internet cafe with free wifi and small desks for people to do work.

Location I am located in central NJ but there is already a large makerspace near me so I would prefer to locate a bit north of where I am so as to not draw potential members away from them. The Montclair/Bloomfield area would be good but I am open to other locations. The space would preferably be in a downtown near a train station so that people can easily visit from NYC.

Space The initial space can be a modest office for rent. We can size up after more members join. I would like to keep the space on the smaller side so that the rent doesn't become an issue. The plan is to be more of a Hackerspace than a Makerspace so the main concern is fitting enough people rather than fitting supplies/machines.

Income My goal is to keep the monthly membership fee as low as possible which will be a challenge since the rent is so ridiculous in this part of the country. We will need to supplement the member dues with other income. Selling classes, used gear, snacks or even server space in the datacenter can be a big help. When the space grows large enough it may be possible to rent out a portion of it to the public for small events like art shows or music performances.

About Me My interests include cloud computing, operating systems, web design, electronics, music, internet and computing history, community organizing, technology and society, cooking, gardening, wood working and industrial design. Professionally I work as a systems administrator and studied computer engineering in college

If you live or work in Northern NJ and this plan interests you then feel free to contact me Even if you are nowhere near me, I am open to ideas and suggestions
