Elgazala HackerSpace is an iot (Internet Of Things) hub that connects members from different backgrounds who share common interests to work on cutting-edge ideas.

What we do ?

Elgazala Hackerspace has been created recently to support the efforts of Elgazala Innovation Center in encouraging the development of startups based on cutting-edge ideas. Elgazala Innovation Center is an ecosystem in which research and development projects are conducted. The center is part of Elgazala Technopark, which is one of the leading science and technology parks in the MENA region. Elgazala Innovation Center includes three main components:

1. An entrepreneurial space where innovative ideas are pre-incubated. The main support by the center at this level is oriented towards the prototyping of the ideas. To this purpose, the entrepreneurs have free access to software and hardware development kits as well as connections to renowned experts operating in the enterprises hosted at Elgazala Technopark.

2. A postgraduate research space in which doctorate and post-doctorate researchers validate their algorithms, protocols and approaches through the development of prototypes that are deployed in the Technopark. The advantages of this approach is two-fold: (a) the research contributions have a concrete impact on the local ecosystem and (b) the researchers acquire practical skills that provides them the ability to contribute to the development of the local business.

3. Lab spaces in which testing and validation tools are set up in order to assess the performance of the prototypes developed by the entrepreneurs and the researchers. The labs currently implemented at the innovation center are the African Laser Laboratory (applied photonics), Arab Beidu research center (satellite navigation), and NATEG Fablab (embedded systems and product design).

What we did ?

The hackerspace effectively started its activities since few months. Starting from January 2016, the most important achievements have been:

1. The development of four prototypes based on original ideas in the areas of smartgrid, social networking, network engineering and environment monitoring. These prototypes were developed in the frame of graduation projects and the project teams could access to 1the development kits obtained through donations from enterprises hosted in Elgazala Technopark.

2. The organisation of three training sessions organised respectively by the Tunisian Branch of the Pragma Corp, the Youth for Science Organisation and the Association Tunisienne Pour L'Entrepreneuriat et l'Essaimage.

3. The establishment of partnerships with stakeholders from the local ecosystem to provide no cash support to the activities of the hackerspace.

What we will do ?

In the near future, the hackerspace will assist young entrepreneurs to develop prototypes of Smart City oriented solutions. The hackerspace will provide assistance to two teams of entrepreneurs (fresh graduated + students) in order to prototype the following ideas:

1. Smart City monitoring platforms: The objective of the project is to deploy a set of sensors in Elgazala Technopark and implement a holistic monitoring platform that combines different data categories (e.g., temperature, free parking slots, number of people) to extract important information. To this end, an IoT Application Programming Interface (API) will be developed to aggregate the data and unify their format. Moreover, a data analytics tool will allow advanced processing of the gathered data. A giant monitor deployed at Elgazala Innovation Center will be used to illustrate the performance of the platform.

2. Remote patient monitoring platform: The objective of this project is to develop an integrated platform for remote patient monitoring. It is based on a smart object held by the patient and a personal space on the cloud used to store the patient file. The smart object is used to collect monitoring information about the patient health and to authenticate to the cloud infrastructure. The doctor can check the patient data while this latter is physically present. This access is volatile in the sense that the doctor will not be able to view the data if the personal object is not plugged.

Moreover, several training curricula are being implemented in the areas of robotics and programming. They will allow improving the practical skills of the attendees in these areas. The main objective is to prepare the students and pupils to conduct R&D projects through imbuing core and soft skills
